Library Development Project :
While the organization work continued in 1993 Founder President now Founder Vice Chancellor, National Prof. (Dr.) N. Islam expressed his determination to improve the unfortunate poor situation of local college and university libraries and contribute to its development with fresh concepts. He desired to have prepared a project for development of the Central Library to the tune of Taka two crore. Accordingly a Development Project was drafted and final copy typed by the Librarian ( there was no typist then) with the typewriter. The Librarian carried it from Dhaka to IAHS Chittagong. The typewriter was donated by the Founder Vice Chancellor for use in the Central Library. The typewriter was the first equipment received in the Central Library. In preparing the project, Dr. A. N. M. Faruque -Ur- Rashid, Assoc. Prof. Of Medicine, USTC, helped the Librarian, USTC. The Development Project was signed by Librarian, USTC and submitted to the Founder Vice Chancellor on the 5th September 1993. Dr. N. Islam, Founder Vice Chancellor, USTC approached The Nippon Foundation, Japan (former Sasakawa Foundation, Japan) and placed some specific proposals to them. Mr. Kinya Narabayashi of the Foundation assured him of their help and cooperation in the development of the library Project. A good news was awaited and soon we came to know that the Foundation agreed to a grant of 2.25 crore Taka for development of the Central Library of University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC).

Foundation Laying Ceremony of Central Library, USTC :
Mr. Abdur Rahman Biswas, Hon'ble President of The People's Republic of Bangladesh and First Chancellor of University of Science and Technology Chittagong laid the Foundation of the Central Library Building on 20 January 1995. The President remarked that, Library is the life-blood of a University and, in fact, of any teaching institution. On this occasion in the address by National Prof. (Dr.) N. Islam, Founder Vice Chancellor (former Founder President) of USTC said that, "The Library is one of most essential components of a seat for learning. This is yet to develop to a satisfactory level in Bangladesh."
Library Committee :
In September 1991, the authority felt that a library committee be formed to recommend steps to be taken for development of the library and standardization of the library services and advice on the Library affairs. Mr. M. Jasim Uddin, after his joining on 1992. He submitted a proposal for Library Committee.

Shifting of Central Library to its own Building :
15th September 1997 is a memorable day for Central Library, USTC on which it (Central Library, former Sasakawa Central Library)
started shifting from the Academic Building to its own Seven storied building in the USTC campus. The shifting work to be completed,
took 9 days and 108 whole-day labourers. At that time the building was incomplete, the Central Library was placed in the completed first
and second floors of 16,242 sft floor area.

The Central Library of USTC will remember with appreciation the services rendered by M/S TSI (Trade Services International)
Construction Ltd. Mr. Nurnabi Bhuiyan and Mr. Ershan Meah both Civil Engineer of TSI Construction Ltd. were very helpful in the
work of minor changes, as far as was possible, in construction of the building. Mr. Munir, Consultant Engineer was also found a
helping person.

Sections of Central Library :
Section 1: Has been set in the 1st and 2nd floors of the Library building on 301sft. floor area with:

Section 3: It has been planned to place Audio-Visual Library in the East portion of the 2nd floor of the Library
Building for which the space was remodeled for accommodation of different AV equipment and current information resources.
The Audio-Visual Library will be equipped with all possible latest electro-magnetic equipment, telecommunication linkages
for access to worldwide reference resources through Internet and Online connections.
In the Reference Section all possible reference materials, all kinds of bibliographies, indexes, directories, maps, charts, almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, compact disks (CD), internet online resources etc. will be available. All the branch libraries will by connected with the Central Library be local mainframe and terminals. The service will be available day and night 24 hours.

A good number of core books are being received from British Council Library, Chittagong and the British Council Library,
Dhaka, as Institutional Corporate Member on the basis of renewable long-term loan.

Equipment facilities available :
Introduction of computerized catalogue, online literature-search and computer with terminals system are expected shortly
which will facilitate quick scanning of library resources that we have, and also outside reference resources. Along-side
manual catalogue on 3" X 5" card will be a subsidiary searching tool for use in the library. Internet and online facilities will
be available very soon.
Highly selective equipment will be available for use in the Central Library and after sales services for the equipment will
be available. The following equipment will be available for use, within a short period.

It is roughly calculated that, TK. 15,00,000/- will be necessary for the required number of the above mentioned equipment.
For the implementation of the above development plan for the Central Library (former Sasakawa Central Library) and Medical Records and Research Centre (MRRC) of the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC), financial assistance from outside will be necessary.
Annual budget :
For books and other information resources TK. 5,00,000/-.(This amount is changeable.)
WORKING HOURS :
From Saturday to Thursday (without break): 7.30 A.M. to 9.00 P.M. Fridays and other holidays closed. This timing is flexible, may be changed when necessary and feasible.
FACILITIES AVAILABLE :
The following existing facilities will be strengthened and need oriented new ones introduced by adding latest library resources and well-informed and skilled manpower:
a) Readers services during whole of the working hours b) Reference services, if necessary, beyond library's own resources c) Bibliographical services d) Short and long term loan facilities to regular users e) Inter-library loans and resource sharing f) Loan to: Teachers: 3 books at one time plus short loans Students: Loan on prior permission g) Audio-visual library, equipped with modern apparatus, viz. Computer System with internet, fax, email facilities, Audio and Video sets with individual visual and hearing aids, AV cassettes and cassette recorders, players, projectors etc. h) Photocopy services i) Utilization of Medical Records (Maintaining their confidentiality).
USTC Auditorium A New Era For Presentation :
Auditorium is a unique feature of the USTC Central Library. It is centrally air, conditioned with excellent sound and light system accommodating 450-500 audience. There is a gallery with accommodation of 100 audience. It is ideally suited for seminar and conference. The room afjacent to be can serve as green room, tea room, academic council and syndicate meeting room. These rooms have separate entrance through which the VIPs can go to the dais.
