DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

Human progress has relied critically on the conversion of science into technology- in agriculture, industry, medicine, communications, transport, and now increasingly and essentially in our management and conservation of our biosphere and its resources. The creation of new scientific knowledge and its transfer to society has not only enhanced the quality of human life but also responded to and resolved an ever-increasing number of problems confronting society. Many of the burning issues in today's world are being addressed through study and research conducted by science graduates. Scientific knowledge is needed to solve the particular problems we have come to associate with life in 21st century. These are the issues which Bachelor of Science students of USTC are considering, learning from and confronting in their study programmed. At USTC science is taught "in context" - firmly anchored in the needs and issues of the real world. In addition to specific and applied scientific knowledge, students develop quantitative ability, logical and analytical thinking skills and calculation and measurement skills all of which are attractive to science and non-science employers.
