Professor Islam has distinguished
himself as the Most Eminent Physician and Medical Scientist of Bangladesh. He has to his credit a brilliant academic and professional career.
Throughout
his academic career he has been a scholar with distinction. Qualified from Calcutta Medical College in 1951. Dr. Islam joined Govt. service in 1951, obtained TDD
(Wales) in July, 1955 securing the highest position in the University: MRCP (Edin) in January, 1956. Dr. Islam has all along been actively engaged in teaching
and research. He has been a pioneer in introducing Postgraduate Medical Education at home as Founder Fellow of College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan,
later on College of Physicians & Surgeons of Bangladesh. Dr. Islam has been Founding Father of IFGMR and Founding Dean of the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical
Education, University of Dhaka. He was Director and Professor of Medicine of IPGMR from its inception till April 1987, when he was made a National Professor. He
was the Founding Chairman of IAHS (Institute of Applied Health Sciences) and Founding President of USTC (University of Science and Technology Chittagong), the
first Technical University in Bangladesh in Private Sector.
Dr. Islam has the great distinction of being awarded MRCP by the Royal College of London without
examination and subsequently FRCP a unique feature in this region and speaks of recognitions of his academic distinction by the Royal College of Physicians of London. He
is the Advisor Emeritus for Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh.
